Seagrass Pipefish
True to its name, the seagrass pipefish looks like a pipe or a blade of seagrass! As its body is long and stiff with very small fins, this tubular fish cannot swim very well to escape predators. Instead, the seagrass pipefish prefers to hide from predators, as its leaf-like or stick-like appearance helps it to camouflage seamlessly among the seagrasses it calls home.
What’s even more peculiar than its unusual body structure is the strange fact that male seagrass pipefishes can get pregnant! Like their seahorse cousins, female seagrass pipefishes lay their eggs on the bodies of their male counterparts. The male will then become “pregnant” and carry the eggs to term, after which it will “give birth” to live young. How cool is that?
