Sandy Beaches

Although sandy beaches may appear bare and dead on the surface, but they are actually home to lots of organisms!

Many of them live their lives buried within the sand, where it is cooler, wetter and safer from predators.

Rocky Shores

Rocky shores are littered with rocks and boulders big and small!

Many organisms can be found either crawling on or attached to rocks, which provide a solid surface for them to live. Others prefer to hide under the rocks, which provide shelter from the sun and from predators.

Seagrass Meadows

Seagrasses are the only flowering plants which can survive while being fully submerged in seawater!

Like tropical rainforests, seagrass meadows are home to an incredible diversity of organisms. Many of the animals we eat as seafood, such as crabs, prawns and fishes, begin their lives within seagrass meadows!

Coral Reefs

Did you know that corals are actually animals?

Coral reefs are growing structures made of Calcium Carbonate, which is produced by living, hard, reef-building corals. Like bustling cities, coral reefs provide homes to an amazing diversity of organisms, some of which we eat as seafood!

Coral Rubble Areas

Corals are animals, and some shores may contain more dead than live corals.

However, while these coral fragments may be dead, they form habitats which are teeming with life! Just like a HDB, the countless nooks and crannies within and under dead corals provide valuable homes for a wide variety of organisms!
