Estuarine Stonefish (Hollow-cheeked Stonefish)

Do not be fooled by the rocky disguise of the estuarine stonefish! Despite its seemingly lifeless appearance, this easily overlooked fish actually possesses a row of extremely venomous and deadly spines on the top of its body. These sharp spines can pierce through shoes to inject venom into the feet of unsuspecting humans, and their stings can even be fatal!

To avoid stepping on an estuarine stonefish, wear covered shoes, tread carefully and watch where you step when exploring the intertidal zone! Keep your eyes peeled, as estuarine stonefishes may be covered in algae and other encrusting animals, further enhancing its stony camouflage.
