Seagrass Filefish

The seagrass filefish comes in a wide range of colours and patterns! However, these colourations are all dull and inconspicuous so that the seagrass filefish can avoid predators by camouflaging perfectly with the seagrasses, seaweeds and coral rubble in its habitat.

Besides its impressive camouflage, the seagrass filefish also has a thin and flat body, which enables it to fit into narrow nooks and crannies that are too small for its predators to access. Once in its hiding place, the seagrass filefish can raise the spine extending above its head and lock it in place, jamming it into the crevice like an anchor. This prevents it from being pulled out from its hiding spot by predators or washed away by currents!
