Carpet Eel-blenny

Although the carpet eel-blenny looks like a snake or an eel, this flexible fish is neither. It actually belongs to a totally different family – dottybacks! Its skin can change colours, ranging from green to brown or even bluish. This helps the carpet eel-blenny to camouflage seamlessly with seagrasses and coral rubble to avoid detection by its prey or predators.

Although the carpet eel-blenny is common on our shores, its incredible camouflage and tendency to hide among corals makes it difficult to spot. Nevertheless, let’s keep a lookout when exploring the intertidal zone to avoid stepping on them!
