Horn-eyed Ghost Crab

The horn-eyed ghost crab is best known for its unique eyes and incredible speed. This crab has a pointy extension or “horn” above each of its eyes and vanishes like a ghost when it runs! In fact, its genus name Ocypode means “swift-footed” in Greek, highlighting its amazing speed!

The horn-eyed ghost crab lives in deep burrows underground, which it digs itself. So, if you see strange holes in the intertidal zone, especially relatively big ones higher up on the shore, please don’t destroy them or dig them up, as they may be the homes of the horn-eyed ghost crab!

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
