Sand Bubbler Crab

Have you ever seen intricate patterns of sand balls on the beach and wondered where they came from? The artists responsible for them are none other than sand bubbler crabs! When the tide is low, these crabs emerge from their burrows to feed, sifting through sand for organic matter like plankton using their pincers and mouthparts. Once done, the sand bubbler crab rolls the processed sand into a tiny ball, probably to avoid sifting through the same spot twice, creating the unique patterns that we see!

These skittish crabs will scuttle into their underground sandy burrows whenever they sense the slightest threat. If you wish to take a peek at a sand bubbler crab, try staying away from its burrow and out of the crab’s sight for a short while. You might just see it coming out of its burrow!
