Dwarf Whipray (Mangrove Whipray)

The dwarf whipray is also known as the mangrove whipray because it prefers brackish water, which is typically found in mangroves. However, sometimes it can also be found in seagrass meadows near Singapore’s mangroves!

The dwarf whipray is commonly caught and eaten as seafood in southeast Asia. In Singapore, sambal stingray dishes can be found in our hawker centres! Unfortunately, due to overfishing, habitat degradation and pollution, the dwarf whipray is becoming rarer both in Singapore and in the rest of the world. Hence, its local conservation status is classified as “Vulnerable”.
