Blue-spotted Fantail-ray

The blue-spotted fantail-ray looks a little unreal and fantastical due to its brilliant blue spots. However, these vibrant and colourful spots actually serve as a warning to predators about the venomous spines on its tail! These sharp barbs can pierce through covered shoes and their venom can cause intense pain!

The blue-spotted fantail ray does not use its venom to hunt its prey, which include molluscs, crustaceans and worms buried in the sediment. Instead, it uses venomous spines to defend itself against predators and other threats, including unsuspecting humans who may accidentally step on or near it. So, please wear covered shoes and walk slowly and carefully when exploring the intertidal zone!
