Living sand dollars are covered in fine spines that feel hairy and velvety to the touch. When they die, all these spines drop off, leaving behind a smooth and spineless skeleton, also known as a test! Once you can tell living and dead sand dollars apart, living sand dollars will no longer look lifeless to you!
