Volcano Barnacle

As their name suggests, volcano barnacles are shaped like tiny volcanoes on the surfaces of rocks! Their thick conical shell actually houses lots of air pockets, which help volcano barnacles to stay cool under the hot sun during low tide!

Barnacles like the volcano barnacle may not look very glamorous, but they still play important roles in the intertidal ecosystem. Not only are barnacles sources of food for predators such as crabs and snails, but they also provide shelter and protection for other marine creatures!
